About Us:  

 

The Abbeyfield model of housing started in England and has expanded around the world. In

Canada, there are over forty Abbeyfield residences. Its goal is to create an inclusive, healthy,

secure and nurturing house environment for seniors that recognizes, respects and provides for

individual needs and interests.

Residents have their own bedsitting room, bathroom and garden plot. They are responsible for

their own personal care, laundry, activities, appointments (including transportation), furnishing

and cleaning their own bedsitting rooms, and preparing their own breakfasts.

Abbeyfield residences are non-profit community based organizations run by a Board of Directors

and volunteers. The only paid staff are the House Coordinator/Cook, Weekend Relief Cooks,

House Keeper, and Live-In Assistant.

 

Relief Cooks:

 

The relief cooks provide relief for times when either the House Coordinator/cook or

Weekend Cook are not available.  The position is therefore on a casual/on-call basis.

 

Accountability:

 

  •  Position accountable to the Board of Directors
  •  Abide by the policies and procedures as set by Abbeyfield House St. Peter’s Society
  •  Assist the House Coordinator
  •  Work as part of a team, with specific responsibilities as outlined below
  •  Applicant must include a cover letter, resume and references. (References must provide
  • information that includes both employment and residential history for the past 5 years.)

 

Main Tasks:

 

  • Prepare lunches and dinners for the 12 residents and their guests that join them from time to time.
  • Maintain a clean cooking and dining environment as per Certified BC Food Safe practices.

 

General Requirements:

 

  • Maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Carry out any reasonable duties as requested by the House Coordinator or Board members
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to develop and maintain a positive relationship with the residents, their families,
  • caregivers, board members and volunteers
  • An understanding of the issues, concerns and needs of seniors
  • Ability to work within broad guidelines with minimal supervision
  • Ability to respond to unexpected situations and interruptions
  • Good decision making in any given situation
  • Ability to decide when to complete minor jobs and when to refer to a professional
  • Can think on his/her feet
  • Calm in an emergency
  • Committed to the residents’ wellbeing
  • Positive experience with seniors
  • A positive attitude: respectful, compassionate, caring
  • A common sense disposition
  • Ability to both follow and give instructions and to work cooperatively

CANDIDATE PROFILE

 

Essential Requirements:

 

  • Must pass a criminal record check
  • Must have BC FOODSAFE certificate
  • Understanding of nutritional and dietary
  • needs of seniors and those on special diets
  • To be aware of and comply with safe working practices
  • Be fit and in good health
  • Be a quiet, non-smoker

 

Desirable Requirements:

 

  • First Aid Certificate
  • Ability to use Heimlich manoeuvre
  • Familiar with BC Provincial regulations, Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA)
